The victims of a tragic West Ashley crash involving three vehicles have been identified by the Charleston County Coroner’s Office on Monday, December 27. The victims died at the scene around 6:40 p.m. on Sunday, December 26. They included Chad Belue, aged 50, Lea Cook, aged 49, and Johns Island, said Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal.
A sedan and two motorcycles were involved in the crash that occurred between Ashley Crossing Drive and Charlie Hall Boulevard on Magwood Drive, said Sgt. Elisabeth Wolfsen Charleston Police. Cook was a passenger and Belue was driving the motorcycle. The driver of the car and the driver of the other motorcycle were rushed to the hospital for treatment after the West Ashley crash.
The driver of the sedan, a Nissan Sentra, received serious injuries and is receiving medical care at the hospital, whereas the driver of the second motorcycle received minor injuries. The sedan was traveling south on Magwood drive, and two motorcycles were traveling north on Magwood drive.
The Nissan veered across the center line and collided head-on with the motorcycle, killing both the male driver and female passenger. Then his car struck the second motorcycle causing minor injuries.
A portion of Magwood Drive was closed by CPD officers and MAIT for several hours as they collected evidence and it was reopened at midnight. This is the 21st traffic accident investigation of the Charleston Police Department in 2021, with the number of traffic deaths in the City of Charleston reaching 22.
