The name of the man who died in a Newberry County shooting near the border with Laurens County in mid-December was released by Coroner Laura Kneece. The man had suffered multiple gunshot wounds while he was walking along a road. The victim was identified as Jamal Jermaine Alston, aged 24, of Fairfield County, according to Coroner Laura Kneece.
A 911 caller spotted Alston at first around 4 am, according to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office. The caller described him walking near the Laurens County border along S.C. Hwy. 66. The caller also described him as “being bloody.”
Newberry and Laurens County deputies responded to the call because of the location of the incident. They found Alston suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and they all rushed to provide medical aid. Emergency services took him from the scene of the incident.
The victim was unable to provide much information about what happened during the incident; however, the victim was conscious at the time when investigators arrived. Details regarding his condition were not provided at that time. He died later that evening, according to an announcement by the coroner.
The Newberry County shooting incident is still under investigation. An autopsy was also scheduled. The investigation is being assisted by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
